"Workplace Discrimination Against, and Jokes About, African Americans, Gays, Jews, Muslims and Others"
Humphrey Taylor
Harris Interactive, November 2002.
This weekly Harris Poll, conducted from Aug. 26 to Sept. 2, 2002, focused on perceptions of workplace discrimination and jokes about minority groups. Of the 2,203 adults surveyed nationwide, African Americans are much more likely than the general public to see blacks as victims of discrimination, with 50 percent reporting they feel that blacks are often victims of discrimination. Gay men and lesbians are also significantly more likely to see themselves as discriminated against, while 27 percent of all women say they often face discrimination. When it comes to workplace jokes against minorities, women, gays and lesbians, seniors, African Americans and Hispanics are most frequently targets. Women are less likely to recall hearing jokes about women, most likely because men make these jokes to other men when women aren't around.
