This report covers the initial research findings of a case study on telecommuting. It is based on a year-long study by the D.C. Council of Governments and involves eight companies ranging in size from 75 to 9,700 employees. The bottom line was that the telecommuting program increased retention and productivity. The program also reduced vehicle miles, improving air quality and increased work time on the days that employees telecommuted. Companies reported that they were better able to attract and retain skilled workers across the board. Unisys joined the program to accommodate growth and curb escalating costs. The company saved more than $1 million annually in facility costs; avoided $1 million in relocation costs in 1997; saw employee absenteeism decrease by one-third; and improved recruitment. This article provides evidence of the link between flexible work arrangements and better corporate performance.
