"Managing Workplace Change"
Robert Taylor
Economic & Social Research Council, November 2002.
Taylor’s “Managing Workplace Change” examines people management trends in the United Kingdom. The report is the fifth installment in the Economic & Social Research Council’s “Future of Work Programme,” which looks at British businesses’ failure to match the productivity levels of the United States and investigates the possible link between these shortcomings and the quality of management, particularly in the area of employee relations. Taylor analyzes findings from the “Change in Employer Practices” survey, which was conducted by a team of researchers based at the London School of Economics, Royal Holloway College, and the Policy Studies Institute at the University of Westminster. Based on a sample of more than 2,000 human resources managers, the findings cover, among other topics: the rising importance of employment issues; the durability of permanent, full-time jobs; the growth of managerial positions; and the role of new information technologies in the workplace.
