American Management Association, December 2004.

Available Online

According to this survey by the American Management Association (AMA), more companies are promoting wellness among their employees. The study found that the number of organizations offering educational programs on self-care topics is up among all seven areas examined: smoking cessation, exercise and fitness, nutrition, blood pressure management, weight management, stress management, and cholesterol management. Among the key findings:

  • Eighty percent of all respondents believe corporations have a responsibility to promote wellness among employees.
  • More than three times as many respondents report an increase in wellness programs at their firms as those who report a decrease.
  • Almost three-quarters (72 percent) say that they take advantage of their employer’s wellness offerings, up from 63 percent in 2003.
  • Only 35 percent reported that their company offers incentives for employees to use their wellness offerings.
  • Companies are more likely to offer discounts on fitness club memberships (45 percent) than have an onsite workout facility.
  • Only 18 percent offer company-sponsored physicals, up from 16 percent in 2003.
  • Forty-nine percent report that their firm has cancelled flu vaccinations due to this year’s shortage.

The AMA surveyed members and customers at 211 companies for the study.
