Intranets.com, a seven-year-old, 45-employee business, provides tools and
services to support small and midsize organizations in creating their own
internal communications Web sites. Founded as a free service during the
dot-com era, Intranets shifted to a paid subscription model in 2001 and
has since grown to be a $10 million organization. The conversion in business
models was imperative to the survival of the firm, and it was implemented
with full employee support, evidenced by an employee attrition rate of 2-3
percent. Rick Faulk, who joined the organization in 2001 and led the transition,
uses a number of tools to develop consensus in the firm’s approach,
most of which involve one-on-one or small group discussion. New employees
are introduced to Intranets through an intensive orientation which is followed
up with a long-term mentoring program. Finally, all employees have stock
options, so all are owners of the company. Rick’s goal is that every
employee believe that Intranets.com is the best company they’ve ever
worked for, and that in supporting the long-term success of the company
they experience personal growth.
