Wall Street Journal and Winning Workplaces Recognize Top Small Employers with Exceptional Workplaces
Winners Announced Today in The Wall Street Journal
New York, NY, September 28, 2009 – The Wall Street Journal today recognizes the Top Small Workplaces in its third annual report featuring some of the best small employers in the U.S. The Journal Report on Small Business features the 15 winners in today's print and online editions.
The Top Small Workplaces report, compiled in partnership with Winning Workplaces—a nonprofit whose mission is to help small and midsize organizations create better workplaces— highlights those small businesses and nonprofits who continue to invest in their people, and illustrates the practices they use to create successful organizations. Many of these employers continued to bolster their hiring, recruitment and professional development efforts to emerge from the recession an even stronger organization. The average annual growth rate from 2007 to 2008 for the fifteen winners was 18%. Two of the three highest growth rates were in companies tied to the commercial and residential construction industry.
The Journal and Winning Workplaces received nearly 630 nominations and 330 completed applications, which were pared down to 35 finalists. A national panel of management and small business experts chosen by the Journal and Winning Workplaces judged the finalists based on specific metrics and qualitative assessments of their success in creating the kind of workplaces that engage employees and deliver successful results.
